About this place

Mujang Hyanggyo was founded in 1420 (Sejong 2nd year) at its current location in Gyoheung-ri, Mujang-myeon. In 1600 (Seonjo 33rd year), the Daeseongjeon, Myeongnyundang, east and west study halls, and inner and outer gates were rebuilt at the present site. In 1840 (Heonjong 6th year) the Myeongnyundang was burned down and rebuilt in spring of 1842 (Heonjong 8th year). In 1852 (Cheoljong 3rd year), the east study hall burned and was rebuilt the following year. Surviving structures include the Daeseongjeon, Myeongnyundang, east and west study halls, and hongsal gate. Mujang Hyanggyo is the representative Joseon-era local educational institution of Mujang and a space for venerating virtuous sages. It currently awards recognition to filial sons and virtuous daughters-in-law in the Mujang area. It also operates the Myeongnyun Academy, serving as a pillar of traditional culture and etiquette education in Mujang-myeon, carrying on the teachings of ancient sages and the noble spirit of the hyanggyo.
