About this place

Seowon were private educational institutions of the Joseon period established to honor distinguished Confucian scholars through rites and to educate local people. Hyochung Seowon, located in Imsil-eup, Imsil-gun, is an academy honoring the filial piety of Kim Bok-gyu and his son Kim Gi-jong. It was established in 1885 (the 6th year of King Cheoljong's reign) by order of the king, built under the direction of Deputy Minister of Personnel Seo Yu-hun. Inside the academy are a lecture hall, the Hyochung shrine, a storage facility, and two steles commemorating the filial piety of Kim Bok-gyu and Kim Gi-jong. These steles (jeongnyo-bi), erected to honor the conduct of loyal subjects, filial sons, and virtuous women, are designated as Jeollabuk-do Tangible Cultural Properties.
