About this place

Located in a Jang clan village in Seodo-ri, Geumgu-myeon, Gimje, this historic house was built in the late 1920s and is a typical rural-style hanok (traditional Korean house) of the modern Joseon era. The village where the house stands is the homeland of the folktale Kongjwi and Patjwi, and is also home to the Namgang Jeongsa, where loyal retainer Jang Taesu (1841-1910) gave his life for his country. In the 1930s and 1940s, this house served as a private village school (seodang) for educating younger students. After nearly a hundred years, the rooms, large wooden-floored hall (daecheong), kitchen, hearth (agungi), and loft (darakbang) are in relatively good condition. The traditional hearth, loft room, and main hall are well-preserved, allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere of traditional Korean living.
