Jisan Seowon

Jisan Seowon, located in Sinchon-ri, Iseo-myeon, Cheongdo-gun, is a Confucian academy built to hold memorial rites for Ilcheongjae Park Ho, Mohyojae Park Ji-hyeon, Gyeongyangjae Park Tae-go, and Jugong Park Jung-chae. It was founded in 1844 (10th year of King Heonjong) to hold memorial rites for Ilcheongjae Park Ho, Mohyojae Park Ji-hyeon, Gyeongyangjae Park Tae-go, and Jugong Park Jung-chae. It was demolished in 1868 (5th year of King Gojong) by the Regent Heungseon Daewongun's decree abolishing the Confucian academies, but it is said that the private property Yeongmojae was then purchased and named 'Jisan Seowon.' In 1964, Sangcheongsa was rebuilt. The building has an octagonal roof measuring four kan at the front and one and a half kan at the side. Between the earth-and-stone walls at the front, a three-kan mountain-shaped gate was erected to give access to the lecture hall, and to the right of the lecture hall a separate space was set aside, where a shrine—a gabled tiled building measuring three kan at the front and two kan at the side—was built. The plan of the lecture hall places two ondol rooms in the center with a one-kan wooden-floored hall (daecheong) adjoining on each side; around the left-hand daecheong, gyejagak (balustrade) railings were set up to form a raised wooden veranda (numaru).
