About this place

A seowon is a private educational institution established from the mid-Joseon period onward by local Confucian scholars for scholarly research and memorial rites for eminent Confucian scholars. Juam Seowon is located in Banggye-ri, Imsil-gun, and was founded in 1714 as a shrine at Juam Village in Jisabang, Nampyeon-bu, with Choe Deokji (pen name Yeoncheun) as the primary figure and Choe Yeonson (pen name Amgye) enshrined alongside. In 1787, Jang Geup (pen name Yulgye) and Jang Gyeongse (pen name Sachon) were added. It was demolished under royal order in 1871 and restored in 1959. The shrine is a three-bay-front, two-bay-side hip-and-gable roof building, and the lecture hall is a four-bay-front, three-bay-side hip-and-gable roof building. Rites are held every year on the third lunar month.
