Junggang High School was established in 1910 when the Giho School, founded in 1908 by patriotic figures of the Giho region, merged with the Yunghui School established by the Heungsadan organization. The school was renamed Junggang School in November 1910 and was taken over by Kim Seong-su in 1915. In 1917 new school buildings were constructed on Gyesan Hill. The current main building was completed in September 1937, designed by Park Dong-jin (1899-1980), a prominent Korean modern architect. The main building, west wing, and east wing are each designated as historic sites. The school is historically significant as the birthplace of the Korean Boy Scouts after the March 1st Movement, the June 10th Independence Movement, and the Gwangju Student Movement.
