About this place

Hyanggyo were state-established educational institutions of the Joseon period dedicated to honoring Confucius and other sages through rites and to educating the local populace. The exact founding date of Imcheon Hyanggyo is unknown, but it is believed to have been established in the early Joseon period. Originally located in Gugyori, it was relocated to its present site in the 14th year of King Sukjong's reign (1688). The school was rebuilt several times thereafter. Surviving structures include the Daeseongjeon, Myeongnyundang, Dongjae, and Seojae. Inside the Daeseongjeon, the spirit tablets of Confucius, his disciples, and Korean sages are enshrined. During the Joseon period, the school received land, servants, and books from the state; today the educational function is gone and only the ritual function remains.
