About this place

Hanpungnu Pavilion — acclaimed as Honam's finest pavilion — is one of the 'Three Han' (Samhan) of Honam, together with Hanbyeokdang in Jeonju and Gwanghanru in Namwon. Although the exact date of its construction is unknown, it was burned by Japanese forces during the Imjin War (1592). In 1599 (the 32nd year of King Seonjo), the older brother Im Je — who had loved Hanpungnu in life — appeared in a dream requesting its restoration, and so his younger brother, magistrate Im Hwan, rebuilt it. It was renovated again by magistrate Im Jungwon in 1783. Together with Jeonju's Hanbyeokdang and Namwon's Gwanghanru, it ranks as one of Honam's three 'Han' pavilions — the finest pavilion of Honam. The building is a two-story pavilion: the lower story is three bays wide and four bays deep, while the upper story is three bays wide and two bays deep, with a hip-and-gable roof. Visitors are not permitted to climb the pavilion, but the surrounding area has been developed as a neighborhood park with sports facilities.
