About this place

The birthplace of martyr Yu Gwan-sun was designated as Historic Site No. 230 in October 1972. The site, which had only the foundation left, was restored in December 1991 as a thatched-roof main structure and ancillary building. Next to the birthplace stands a commemorative stele with poetry by Park Hwa-seong and calligraphy by Yi Cheol-gyeong, and nearby is Maebong Church where Yu Gwan-sun attended. The tiled house next to the birthplace is called the 'management house.' When Yu Gwan-sun's younger brother Yu In-seok had nowhere to live, the government built a house for him in 1966 and it was rebuilt as a tiled house in 1977. Currently, a descendant of Yu In-seok lives there. The Yu Gwan-sun Martyr Memorial Hall was opened in April 2003 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the martyr's birth.
