According to the Yeoji Dosu (Geographic Survey) of the Joseon period, the Nampo Government Office Gate was a government office building of Nampo Eupseong (walled town). Previously there were many buildings including a guesthouse (gaeksa), east government hall (dongheon), official residence (asa), local administration office (hyanggcheong), local court office (jakkcheong), and county office (hyeonsa); currently, the Jinseo-ru pavilion, the inner triple gate (naesammun), and the outer east hall (oedongheon) remain. The government office gate, which served as the main gate of the Nampo County government office, is a two-story gate-tower structure 3 bays wide and 2 bays deep, with the lower floor used as an entrance and the upper floor as an open-air pavilion. It is a representative example of Joseon-era local government architecture.
