Okganjeong

About this place

Okganjeong is a pavilion built in 1716 (the 42nd year of King Sukjong) by the Neo-Confucian scholar brothers Jeong Man-yang and Jeong Gyu-yang, who lived during the reign of King Sukjong of Joseon, in order to nurture their disciples. Here they pursued scholarly research and trained younger scholars, producing many renowned sages and eminent scholars, including Chief State Councilor Jo Hyeon-myeong, Third Minister of Justice Jeong Jung-gi, and Royal Secretary Jeong Gan. Afterward, although the court repeatedly urged them to take office, they declined and devoted their entire lives solely to scholarship. It is an L-shaped pavilion building measuring three kan across the front and four and a half kan on the side, which well preserves distinctive features such as its window-and-door construction methods.
