Osan Seowon

About this place

Osan Seowon, located in Yeongju, was founded in the 34th year of King Sunjo (1834); it was established by the public consensus of local Confucian scholars to honor the scholarship and virtuous conduct of Kim Nan-sang, and his memorial tablet was enshrined there. The shrine was named Gyeonghyeonsa and the lecture hall Myeonggyodang. The commemorative record was written by Yi Hwi-nyeong, the enshrinement text by Yu Tae-jwa, and the offering text by Yi Gwang-jeong. When the academy was elevated in rank, the notice text was written by Kim Hui-ju. Osan Seowon served to enshrine worthies and to contribute to local education, but it was demolished around 1868 (5th year of King Gojong) under the Daewongun's decree abolishing the seowon and was never restored. Today, on the site of the academy stand Maeyangjeong, a pavilion of Kim Nan-sang, his memorial stele, and a shrine; inside the shrine are preserved the plaques of Osan Isa, Gyeonghyeonsa, and Osan Seowon.
