Wolsongjeong Pavilion, one of the eight scenic spots of Gwandong, was first built during the Goryeo period and rebuilt during the mid-Joseon era by provincial governor Park Won-jong. It fell into disrepair, leaving only traces, until 1933 when local resident Hwang Man-yeong and others rebuilt it. However, near the end of the Japanese colonial period, the Japanese navy stationed at Wolsong demolished it, citing it as a target for enemy aircraft. In 1964, a reinforced concrete pavilion was erected by a group of overseas Koreans, but in 1979 it was torn down as it could not recapture the original appearance, and in 1980 a new building was constructed in the Goryeo style. The pavilion is surrounded by a pine forest of coastal pines, and the sunrise over the blue East Sea is a famous sight drawing tourists and photographers.
