About this place

This Buddha statue was discovered during a river improvement project on the Yongjangcheon stream in the 1970s, 1 km from its current location, and was moved to its present hillside position. There is a story that two statues were once upstream along the Yongjangcheon, 5 km from here, and one was swept away—though this is not confirmed. The face and back of the hands are carved in granite, with rough chisel marks on the sides and back; the broken neck has been repaired with adhesive. The upper part features a trapezoidal face wearing a crown with a small Buddha carved on it, though heavily worn. The left hand is raised and the right supports something below. The overall technique is formal and lacks three-dimensionality, suggesting it was a locally self-made Buddha of the Goryeo period. This area is along the Seosan Aramegilcheonnyeonmisogil trail.
