Hyanggyo were state-run local educational institutions of the Goryeo and Joseon periods, founded to honor great Confucian scholars and educate the local populace. During the Joseon period they received land and servants from the government, but the educational function was abolished with the 1894 Gabo Reform. The exact date of Seokseong Confucian School's founding is unknown, but it appears to date from the early Joseon period. Burned during the Imjin War, it was rebuilt in the 1st year of King Injo (1623) and has been repaired several times since. The layout shows the 'front study, rear shrine' arrangement, with the Myungnyundang lecture hall at the front and the Daeseongjeong shrine at the rear. Other buildings include the east dormitory, inner and outer triple gates, and the caretaker's house. Nearby attractions include the Yangsongi Mushroom Village, Jeonggaksa Temple (Buyeo), the Buyeo Sangjik-ri dolmens, and the Neungan-gol ancient burial mounds.
