In 1816 (the 16th year of King Sunjo) in the late Joseon period, the Bible was handed to Korea's officer Jo Dae-bok by Captain Murray Maxwell, commander of the British ship Alceste, which briefly anchored at Galgot in Maryangjin. The Bible Transmission Site Memorial Hall opened on September 5, 2016, marking Korea's first-ever 200th anniversary of the Bible's arrival, with the aim of researching, exhibiting, educating, and providing experiences of the history of the Bible's transmission, and of conveying right values beyond nation and generation. The first and second floors are exhibition halls, the third floor is an observation cafe, and the fourth floor has a multipurpose room (chapel). The exhibition halls display an original King James Bible produced in England and Korean Bible translations from various periods, and there is also a photo zone for taking commemorative photos. A little away from the memorial hall there is an outdoor memorial park with a Bible transmission monument and a sculpture of a British sailing ship.
