About this place

Hwadong Seowon is a shrine of the Gwangsan Kim clan. Originally in 1796 (the 20th year of King Jeongjo), a shrine named Jongsadang was established in Pyeongjang-ri, Daejeon-myeon, Damyang-gun, South Jeolla Province (present-day Pyeongjang-dong, Gwangju Metropolitan City), the ancestral domain of the first ancestor, Silla Prince Heunggwang, to enshrine and conduct memorial rites for Kim Yanggam. It was demolished by a royal edict. Kim Seunggil and Kim Ohaeng were enshrined at Gyeonghyeonsa in Jangseong, but the shrine was demolished under Japanese colonial pressure. In 1957, the shrine was rebuilt at its current location, and Kim Yanggam, Kim Inwoo, Kim Seunggil, and Kim Ohaeng are now venerated here.
