About this place

Seungnyeonsa Temple is a Buddhist temple on the southern slope of Yeonhwasan Mountain (527.9 m) near Sandong-myeon, Namwon. This temple, where Buddhist nuns come to study, has an unknown exact founding date; it was historically known as 'Geumgangsa' and was frequented by eminent monks drawn by its beautiful scenery overlooking Jirisan. Among them, Jeonghye National Preceptor, one of the 16 national preceptors of Goryeo, spent his later years here and wished to expand the temple but passed away before fulfilling his wish. His disciple Juram inherited his will and rebuilt the temple in 1361 (the 10th year of King Gongmin), changing its name to Seungnyeonsa. It was later abandoned during the late Joseon period, but has been rebuilt since 1986. Nearby attractions include Namwon Natural Recreation Forest and the Namwon Naedong-ri Ginkgo Tree.
