About this place

This was the home of Sin Seok-gu (1875-1950), one of the 33 Representatives of the Nation, at the time of the March 1st Movement in 1919. Sin Seok-gu converted to Christianity in 1907, was baptized the following year, and studied theology at Hyeopseong Theological Seminary. He served as an evangelist in Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do, and in September 1917 was ordained as a Methodist minister. While serving as senior pastor of Supyogyo Church in Seoul from November 1918, he was persuaded by Oh Hwa-yeong to participate as a representative of the people in the March 1st Movement. On March 1, 1919, he read the Declaration of Independence at Taehwagwan and was arrested by Japanese police, serving 2 years and 8 months in prison. In July 1938 he led the resistance against shrine worship and again served prison time. He continued resisting Japanese demands until liberation and was imprisoned until Korea's independence. In April 1949, he was arrested as a ringleader of an anti-communist secret organization in Jinnamp'o and died in prison during the Korean War.
