Site of Mangwonjeong Pavilion

A pavilion located in Hapjeong-dong, it is a Seoul Metropolitan Monument that was restored and has been maintained since October 1989. In the 6th year of King Sejong (1424), Grand Prince Hyoryeong built a villa here; the following year, when King Sejong came to the western outskirts to observe farming and stopped by the pavilion, a welcome rain fell, and it is said he named it 'Huiujeong' (Pavilion of Welcome Rain). In the 15th year of King Seongjong (1484), Grand Prince Wolsan greatly renovated the pavilion and named it Mangwonjeong. In the 12th year of Yeonsangun (July), it was expanded to seat some 1,000 people and renamed Suryeojeong, but in September of that year, following the Jungjong coup, its name was changed back to Mangwonjeong. Having disappeared due to the great Eulchuk flood of 1925 and the development of the Han River, it was rebuilt as part of a plan to restore cultural relics along the Han River, with construction beginning in June 1988 and completed in October 1989. The nearby neighborhood of Mangwon-dong takes its name from this very pavilion.
