About this place

The Gongju Jeongji-san Archaeological Site was first designated a Chungnam Provincial Monument on 28 July 1998 and, following excavation by the National Gongju Museum which confirmed it as a major site believed to be a state-level ritual complex, was elevated to a Historic Site on 6 November 2006. It is a royal ancestral ritual site of Baekje, located adjacent to the Gongju Songsan-ri Tumuli (a Historic Site). The ritual complex was created by clearing all existing buildings, cutting down the ridge, and levelling the ground into a broad, flat terrace. A wooden fence two to three rows deep was erected on the south-east side facing Gongsanseong Fortress; a wide, deep moat more than 5 m wide and 2 m deep, with a narrow entrance no wider than about 1 m, was dug along the ridge connecting toward the Songsan-ri Tumuli. Several buildings were constructed inside, and artefacts associated with the Crown Prince — including an elaborate jar-stand (janggo-shaped vessel stand) decorated with ornamental fittings — were collected at the site.
