Banghojeong Incised Meander Stream

Banghojeong is a venerable pavilion perched atop a cliff in the Sinseong Valley. It was built in 1619 by Jo Jun-do, a mid-Joseon scholar, out of longing for his late mother. When existing rock is broken into fine fragments, these are called sediment, and rock formed by the accumulation and hardening of sediment is called sedimentary rock. Sediment is mostly carried by flowing water and deposited where the current slows; later, buried deep underground, it becomes hard rock. The sedimentary rock at Banghojeong is composed of sandstone, mudstone, shale, and the like. Originally the sediments accumulated horizontally, but after they solidified into rock the strata were uplifted and tilted. Over time the upper part of the tilted strata was eroded flat, and Banghojeong was placed upon this eroded surface, giving it its present appearance.
