Tayangseowon

Tayangseowon was an academy established in the 17th year of King Yeongjo (1741) to hold memorial rites for three masters: Son Hong-ryang (posthumous title Jeongpyeonggong), Kim Ja-su (pen name Sangchon), and Ryu Jung-eom (pen name Pasan). However, it was demolished under the Daewongun's decree abolishing the seowon; thereafter an altar (dan) was raised on the hill behind Song-ri in Iljik to continue the rites, and in 1984 it was restored by the local Confucian scholars (sarim), with memorial services now held every year on the jungjeong day of the third lunar month. The academy's shrine is called Sanghyeonsa, its lecture hall Seonggyeongdang, its eastern chamber Jinsujae, and its main gate Gyeongangmun; regrettably, the western chamber (Seojae) was never built.
