Sinheungsa Temple (Yeongcheon)

According to tradition, Sinheungsa Temple in Yeongcheon was founded during the reign of Silla King Jinpyeong, though no documentary records survive. The original temple stood on level ground but was converted into farmland long ago, leaving only a stone pagoda. In 1957, the monk Jang Baekhyeon rebuilt the temple on the site and named it Sinheungsa. From the stone pagoda still standing, it is certain that this was a Unified Silla temple complex. The grounds centre on the Three-storey Stone Pagoda of Sinwol-ri, Yeongcheon — designated a National Treasure — around which the main hall and residential quarters are arranged.
