About this place

Anguksa is the only ancient temple surviving within Jeoksangsan Fortress and is said to have been founded in 1277 (the 3rd year of King Chungyeol of Goryeo) by the monk Wolin. In the 6th year of King Gwanghae's reign (1614), an archive building was erected inside the fortress, and in the 19th year of King Injo's reign (1641) a Portrait Hall was added to store the Joseon Wangjo Sillok and the royal genealogical records (Seonwoллок) at the Jeoksangsan Royal Archive. To guard the archive, Hoguksa Temple was built — Anguksa had already existed before this, but together with Hoguksa it was used as barracks for monk-soldiers protecting the archive and came to be known as Anguksa. When the Jeoksangsan Pumped-Storage Power Plant was constructed, the temple was relocated to the site of Hoguksa, so Anguksa now stands on the former Hoguksa grounds. Nearby attractions include Muju Resort and the Naje Tongmun gate and Gucheon-dong Valley.
