About this place

According to records, when Marananta was traveling to the Baekje Kingdom he fell ill from an endemic disease, but drank water from Umyeonsan Mountain and recovered. He then built Daesungchodang (a thatched hermitage) on Umyeonsan, which is said to be the origin of Daesungsa Temple. Additionally, Venerable Baek Yong-seong, one of the 33 representatives of national independence who signed the March 1st Independence Declaration, resided here, led the Buddhist delegation in the great patriotic independence movement, and participated as the Buddhist representative. Today Daesungsa Temple enshrines a wooden seated Buddha statue crafted by Venerable Baek Yong-seong (a Tangible Cultural Heritage of Seoul).
