About this place

Imheosa is a Buddhist temple affiliated with Bulguksa, the main temple of the 11th district of the Jogye Order, located within a grove of evergreen Chinese fringe trees (이팝나무) on Hyanggyosan in Heunghae-eup, Pohang. It is said to have been built to ward off Japanese pirate raids with the power of the Buddha, but the exact date of its founding is unknown, and its construction appears to date from the 1910s. In 1933 and 1940, farmland was donated by worshipers and the temple grounds were expanded. After falling into disrepair, the monk Deogam revived the temple's tradition; in 1983 it was rebuilt. The precinct contains the Daeungbojeon (main hall), three bays wide and two deep, a Mountain Spirit Hall (Sannyeongak), and a newly built residence building.
