About this place

Cheongwunsa Temple began when the monk Bocheon built a one-room thatched cottage and resided there in the 19th century; the good spring water at this location attracted many visitors. A dharma hall was built on March 10, 1925, and the temple joined the Taego Order. In 1927, the monk Wolin expanded the thatched dharma hall to three bays and built monks' quarters at the current Daeungjeon site. In 1931, the thatched dharma hall was demolished and a new dharma hall was built in its place, reviving the temple; this dharma hall is the current Gwaneumsajeon. The 'Daehye Bogak Seonsa Seo' (Collected Teachings of National Master Dahui Pujue), designated a Jeollabuk-do Tangible Cultural Heritage, is a compilation of the teachings of the Southern Song high monk Master Bogak Seonsa over more than 40 years, with a postscript written by Yi Saek in the 13th year of King U of Goryeo (1387) and republished in 1531. Cheongwunsa is famous for its White Lotus Festival (Haso Baengnyeonje).
