About this place

Daekjeoksa is a Buddhist temple affiliated with the Donghwasa (main temple of the 9th district of the Jogye Order), said to have been founded in 876 CE by the Dharma Master Bojo as a hermitage. During the Goryeo period, the Dharma Master Boyang is said to have restored it. Entering the late Joseon period, it was burned down during the Imjin War and in 1689, the monk Seowol Seonghae oversaw a major reconstruction that gave it the appearance of a temple. The Geungnakjeon (Paradise Hall), which appears to have been rebuilt in the mid-Joseon period or later, expresses the Buddhist ideal paradise of the Pure Land. Upon entering the precincts, the Geungnakjeon stands centrally, flanked by the Hyanggak and Dongchuk-dang to the side, with the Jijang-jeon to the west, and the Sannyeong-gak on a stone terrace to the rear west of the Geungnakjeon. The Daekjeoksa Geungnakjeon was designated as Treasure No. 836 on January 8, 1985.
