Jogyesa is the head temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. Its predecessor, Gakhwangsa Temple, was founded in 1910 in the heart of Jongno, Seoul, and for over a century Jogyesa has been the spiritual home of Korean Buddhists, symbolizing 'the first address of Korean Buddhism.' Located in the center of Jongno, Seoul, it provides citizens with a peaceful urban retreat. Traditional Buddhist practitioners and modern city dwellers alike visit continuously. The neatly arranged grounds are filled with lotus lanterns in spring, lotus flowers in summer, and chrysanthemums in autumn. A seven-story stone pagoda built in 1930 stands in front of the main hall, enshrining Buddha's relics brought from Sri Lanka in 1914. The bell pavilion rings its drum, bell, cloud plaque, and wooden fish at morning and evening services for all sentient beings.
