Nampo Walled Town served as a place to protect local residents and fulfill combined military and administrative functions, built of stone on a hill at the western end of the Charyeong Mountain Range. It was originally built during the reign of King U of Goryeo to defend against Japanese pirates raiding the west coast and to control maritime traffic on the West Sea. Shortly after its construction, in 1390 (the 2nd year of King Gongyang), military barracks were added to complete it. The outer wall is built with stones laid at right angles, while the inner side is earthen fill. Three gates on the east, west, and south sides are each protected by an ong-seong (semi-circular outer barbican wall) built to a height of 4 m. It was designated a Chungcheongnam-do Monument in 1973.
