About this place

Sunchang Daemosanseong is a mountain fortress on Daemosan hill, Baeksanri, Sunchang-eup, Sunchang-gun, which was built and maintained from the Three Kingdoms period through the Joseon period. Constructed during the Three Kingdoms period, it was also utilized as a granary during the Joseon period. It is believed that the fortress walls remained intact because the fortification was close to the administrative seat of Sunchang County during the Joseon period, providing protection for the granary. According to historical records, the fortress's legend says 'a grandmother and her nine sons once built a fortress here and stored much grain, which later became government grain.' Hence it is also called the Old Woman's Fortress (Halmi Seonseong). The plan of Sunchang Daemosanseong is roughly trapezoidal, a valley-enclosing stone fortress (pogokjik seonseong) surrounding two peaks. With a perimeter of about 875 m, it is a medium-sized mountain fortress, second in scale after Damyang Geumseong Sanseong in the region. Inside the fortress stands Daemoam hermitage and flat ground.
