Tomb Area of Princess Jeongseon

Located in Gung-dong, Guro-gu, this is the tomb area of the Andong Gwon clan into which Princess Jeongseon of the late Joseon period married. Princess Jeongseon was the seventh daughter of King Seonjo, the 14th monarch of Joseon; she married Gwon Dae-im of the powerful Andong Gwon family and lived in the area around 67 Gung-dong, Guro-gu, as it is now. The name Gung-dong (Palace Village) itself derives from the fact that they lived in a tiled house grand as a palace. In the tomb area of Princess Jeongseon lie several graves of the Andong Gwon clan, including the tomb of her husband Gwon Dae-im, and this burial ground is commonly counted by geomancers as the finest of auspicious sites. Their tombs serve as valuable examples of how the tomb areas of Joseon merit subjects were laid out, and the spirit-path stele (sindobi) and gravestones of the site are esteemed as precious materials for studying the funerary system of the time. The Gungdong Ecological Park beside the Princess Jeongseon tomb area, with its ecological trail, walking paths, resting pavilions, and exercise equipment, is pleasant for strolling; with more than 25,000 various flowers and trees planted and over 100 fancy carp swimming in its reservoir, it boasts beautiful scenery and an ecological environment rarely seen in Seoul. It is well worth visiting in conjunction with the Princess Jeongseon tomb area.
