Unsan Seowon is a Confucian academy built to honor and enshrine Damam Baek Mun-bo and Seongheon Baek Hyeon-ryong. According to records, at the time of its construction it was a large complex of 41 kan—rare in the Yeonghae region—and it was fully equipped with the features befitting a seowon. It was abolished under the Regent Daewongun's decree ordering the closure of the seowon, but in 1899 a village school (seodang) was built on the former site of the academy, and it kept the lineage of private education alive until the 1950s.
