A seowon is a private educational institution established by local Confucian scholars from the mid-Joseon period onward for the study of Confucianism and to hold memorial rites for Confucius and distinguished Confucian scholars. Located between the Gochang public stadium and the Wellpark City development, the Wolam Seowon was established in 1946 by local Confucian scholars to enshrine and honor Munjeonggong Jo Gwangjo (1482-1520), a renowned scholar of the mid-Joseon period. The complex features a three-bay shrine with gabled roof, a three-bay gate, a four-bay lecture hall, four-bay east dormitory, three-bay west dormitory, and a three-bay caretaker's cottage. This seowon is significant as a continuation of the spirit of Joseon-era Confucian scholars like Jo Gwangjo into the modern era.
