Sokcho Abai Village
Sokcho, Gangwon
Abai Village in Cheongho-dong, Sokcho, Gangwon Province, is a historically significant village where North Korean refugees from Hamgyeong Province and other northern regions settled during the Korean War while waiting to return home. To enter the village, visitors must cross Cheongcho Lake on a gaetbae, a small ferryboat propelled by pulling a rope, which is itself a unique experience and photo opportunity. Hamgyeong-style abai sundae and squid sundae are local specialty foods available only in this village, with sundae shops lining every alley. Also known as a filming location for the drama Autumn in My Heart, the village exudes a nostalgic and sentimental atmosphere as a hidden gem of Sokcho.
